The Rado DiaStar Original is Rado's oval-cased watch, mostly automatic, descended from the 1962 DiaStar that Rado presented as the first scratch-resistant watch. What is the Rado DiaStar Original?

The Rado DiaStar Original is an oval-cased watch that carries on the DiaStar 1, launched by Rado in 1962 and hailed by the brand as the world's first scratch-proof watch. That first DiaStar brought hard metal and sapphire crystal into watchmaking when neither was common, and introduced the broad oval bezel the line still uses. Many current models add a Ceramos bezel, a Rado ceramic-metal material, on stainless steel or PVD-coated steel cases. The Original Automatic R12413533 has a CVD-coated hardmetal case.

Which Rado DiaStar Original size and movement should I choose?

Choose the 38 mm automatic for the standard Rado DiaStar Original. The R12161253 ($2,700 CAD) has the R764 calibre, an 80-hour power reserve, a day-date display and 100 m water resistance. The skeleton R12162153 ($3,100) shows its R808 calibre, also 80 hours. For smaller wrists, the 30 mm Diamonds model R12171713 ($3,600) uses the R586 calibre with 48 hours, and The Original Automatic R12413533 ($1,800) is 35 mm. The DiaStar Original 60-Year Anniversary Edition R12163118 is $3,100. More than 20 of our models are 38 to 39 mm.

What dial colours does the Rado DiaStar Original come in?

Yellow is the most common dial colour in the Rado DiaStar Original range, on more than 10 of our models. Black, green and blue follow, with silver, red, grey and skeleton dials also listed. Some cases are PVD-coated in a yellow gold colour, and The Original Automatic R12413533 is in CVD-coated hardmetal. The 30 mm Diamonds model has a yellow dial with 11 Wesselton diamond hour markers.

No watch is scratch-proof, but the Rado DiaStar Original is built around scratch-resistant materials. On models with a Ceramos bezel, the bezel and the sapphire crystal resist scratches, while a stainless steel or PVD-coated steel case can still mark. More than 25 of our models are water resistant to 100 m, and some are rated lower, so check each product page.
