What is the difference between Seiko 5 Sports and Seiko Prospex?+
Seiko 5 Sports is Seiko's everyday automatic sports watch, a line that goes back to the 1963 Sportsmatic 5. Prospex is Seiko's line for sport and adventure, built on Japan's first diver's watch of 1965, and includes the Sea divers and the Speedtimer solar chronographs. At La Maison Monaco, 5 Sports starts at $425 and Prospex at $725.
What is the Seiko 5 Sports SKX series?+
The SKX series is the divers' style within Seiko 5 Sports, with a rotating bezel and water resistance of 100 m. The SRPD51 is a good example: a 42.5 mm steel automatic with the 4R36 movement, about 41 hours of power reserve and a Hardlex crystal.
Is a Seiko 5 Sports a good first automatic watch?+
For many people, yes. A Seiko 5 Sports is an automatic that winds with the motion of your wrist, with 100 m water resistance and a wide choice of dials, bracelets and sizes, starting at $425. The 4R36 movement also winds by hand and has a stop-seconds function, so you can set the time precisely.

The Maison
Seiko began in 1881, when Kintaro Hattori, then 21, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. His factory took the name Seikosha, from the Japanese word seiko, meaning precision, and in 1924 the first watch to carry the Seiko name was released. In 1963 Seiko launched the Sportsmatic 5, Japan's first automatic day-date watch and the ancestor of today's Seiko 5 Sports; in 1964 it became Official Timer of the Tokyo Olympic Games; and in 1965 it launched Japan's first diver's watch, the starting point of the Prospex line. On December 25, 1969, Seiko released the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch. Seiko is one of the few fully integrated watchmakers, designing and developing its own movements, and its watches are available at La Maison Monaco from $325 to $1,075.
