Questions about Mikimoto

How much do Mikimoto pearls cost in Canada?

Mikimoto pieces at La Maison Monaco run from $1,500 to $12,000 CAD. Single Akoya pearl pendants in 18K gold start around $2,600, Akoya pieces with diamonds generally cost more, and South Sea pearl pendants such as Morning Dew sit between $8,400 and $10,500. Prices are in Canadian dollars and follow the live catalog.

What is an Akoya pearl?

An Akoya pearl is a round saltwater cultured pearl grown in the Akoya oyster, usually 6 to 9 mm across. It is the classic white pearl of a pearl necklace or stud earring, valued for its high luster and round shape. Most of the Mikimoto pieces we carry use Akoya pearls.

Are Mikimoto pearls real or fake?

Mikimoto pearls are real cultured pearls, not imitations. An oyster grows the pearl around a small nucleus and deposits the same nacre as in a natural pearl. Mikimoto pioneered this method, and each pearl is graded for luster, surface, shape and matching. Glass or coated-bead pearls are a different product.

What is the difference between Akoya and South Sea pearls?

South Sea pearls grow in larger oysters than Akoya pearls and are usually bigger, often 9 mm and above against about 6 to 9 mm for Akoya. Akoya is known for sharp luster and the classic white look. In our range, the Morning Dew pendants use black and white South Sea pearls.

Is La Maison Monaco an authorized Mikimoto dealer in Canada?

Yes. La Maison Monaco is an authorized Mikimoto retailer in Canada, so every piece is genuine and priced in CAD. You can order online with shipping across Canada, or view the pearls in person at one of our 15 boutiques.

How do I take care of pearl jewellery?

Put pearls on last, after perfume, hairspray and cosmetics, and wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wearing. Pearls are softer than most gemstones, so store them separately in a soft pouch and keep them away from harsh chemicals. Bring them to a boutique if the setting or clasp needs checking.

The Maison

Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in culturing his first pearl at Ago Bay in Japan in 1893 and went on to perfect the fully round cultured pearl. His method places a small nucleus inside an Akoya oyster, which then deposits nacre, the same material that forms a natural pearl, in a controlled and repeatable way. That work created the cultured pearl industry and made fine pearl jewellery available beyond the rare natural pearls that came before. The house has been built on consistency ever since: pearls graded and matched for luster, surface, shape and colour to one standard. Akoya pearls form the core of the range, with South Sea pearls, which grow larger, used for the statement pieces. At La Maison Monaco, every Mikimoto piece is sourced through the authorized channel.
