Mikimoto Jewellery

Authorized Mikimoto Retailer in Canada

Overview

La Maison Monaco is an authorized Mikimoto retailer in Canada, with CAD pricing and full authenticity on every cultured pearl piece. Mikimoto is the Japanese maison that invented the cultured pearl, and that origin still defines the house: pearls matched to one standard, then set in necklaces, earrings, pendants, rings, and bracelets. The heart of the collection is the classic Akoya strand, where every pearl is matched for size, colour, and luster; South Sea pearls anchor the larger statement pieces. The signature Mikimoto necklace, an Akoya pearl strand matched for size, colour, and luster from choker to opera length. The classic single-strand is the piece the house is built on, with longer and graduated strands for formal wear.

Pearl Pendants

A single fine pearl on a gold chain, frequently paired with diamonds in the house's floral and station designs. A versatile way to wear one exceptional Akoya or South Sea pearl.

Akoya Pearls

The classic round saltwater cultured pearl that made Mikimoto's name, prized for its high luster and consistent matching. The standard for the traditional white pearl necklace and stud earring.

South Sea Pearls

The larger white and golden pearls grown in bigger oysters, used for statement strands, pendants, and rings. Where Mikimoto moves from the everyday classic to the rare and the bold.

Questions about Mikimoto

How much do Mikimoto pearls cost in Canada?

Mikimoto pricing in CAD spans a wide range, with pearl stud earrings and single pendants at the accessible end and matched Akoya strands and South Sea pieces rising from there with pearl size, luster grade, and length. Because price depends on the exact piece and pearl quality, the current CAD price for each Mikimoto item is shown on its product page in the live grid.

What is an Akoya pearl?

An Akoya pearl is the classic round saltwater cultured pearl grown in the Akoya oyster, the type Mikimoto pioneered and the one most people picture in a white pearl necklace. Akoya pearls are valued for their high luster and clean, round shape, which is why they are matched into the uniform strands and stud earrings that define the Mikimoto look.

Are Mikimoto pearls real or cultured?

Mikimoto pearls are genuine cultured pearls, which are real pearls. A cultured pearl is grown by an oyster around a nucleus, depositing the same nacre as a natural pearl, and Mikimoto invented this process in 1893. They are not imitation or glass pearls; they are authentic pearls produced through cultivation, then graded by Mikimoto for luster, surface, shape, and matching.

How do I choose a pearl necklace?

Start with length and pearl size. A single-strand Akoya choker or princess length suits most necklines and everyday wear, while opera lengths read more formal. Larger pearl diameters and higher luster raise both presence and price, and matching across the strand is what separates a fine necklace from an ordinary one. For a first pearl necklace, a matched single-strand Akoya is the classic choice, and our boutiques let you compare sizes and luster in person.

The Maison

Mikimoto was founded by Kokichi Mikimoto, who produced the world's first cultured pearl in 1893 at Ago Bay in Japan and went on to perfect the fully round cultured pearl. His breakthrough was a method of placing a nucleus inside an Akoya oyster so it would deposit nacre, the same material as a natural pearl, in a controlled and repeatable way. That single innovation created the cultured pearl industry and made the fine pearl necklace attainable beyond the rare natural pearls that came before. The spiritual home of the house is Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba, Mie Prefecture, where the original pearl cultivation work was carried out and where the Ama, the traditional Japanese pearl divers, are still associated with the brand's story. Kokichi Mikimoto's stated ambition was to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls, and the house built its reputation on consistency: pearls matched for luster and colour to a degree the market had never seen. Today Mikimoto remains the reference name in cultured pearls, working primarily in Akoya for its signature strands and in South Sea and Conch pearls for its larger and coloured pieces, all held to the grading discipline that began on Pearl Island over a century ago.
